Betty Jo Horn is a 68-year-old widow who lost her husband in a mine collapse. She cares for two grandsons, Michael and Mason, who just finished 4th and 5th grade. Betty Jo also cares for the boys' father who sustained serious head trauma which, among other complications, reduced his vision and hearing. Betty Jo often welcomes for her otherwise homeless nephew.
The trailer has one bedroom for Betty Jo and a small room which falls on one side where her nephew often stays. Her grandsons and son sleep on the couch together every night. The boys know no other life. When I told the boys that ASP (Appalachia Service Project) would commit to a room addition such that they would have a bed for the first time, the response was "That's the best news I've heard in my entire life." Betty Jo sobbed in tears of joy and turned immediately to God to thank Him for sending ASP volunteers like you.
The trailer has one bathroom. The family has septic but must bucket water to force-flush their toilet. They turn a knife shoved into the missing hot water knob such that water will flow from the hole left from the missing tub fixture. They fill buckets with water to bathe. The bathroom sink does not function and the entire bathroom lacks electricity.
There is an addition on the home and an additional roof over half of the trailer, both of which were well-done by Betty Jo's late son-in-law who unfortunately committed suicide halfway through the project leaving the family with only half a roof repair and no safe exit out of the front door.
It is beyond possible to lift this home from its current substandard condition, but our budget only allows us to do so much. If you would like to donate to this cause, please call or email me at any time this summer. Please spread the word in your communities and congregations. Items needed for the boys include beds, dresser, nightstand, clothing, socks, etc. and may be collected at our center. Their room will be 8'x10'. Monetary donations are always welcomed.
We thank you for your service and dedication to the families of Appalachia.
